Utilizing Technology to Train Smarter
by Laura Walton
Finding a way to work harder and smarter than the competition is always a priority with the Dallas Diamonds. They train as professionals; utilizing every source they can find to maintain a championship level of play. That includes off-season strength training, bikram yoga, speed training camps and now the newest technology in mouthguards.
The Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM), locally being offered by Dr. Becky Coats, a neuromuscular dentist in Grapevine, Texas is making big news, enabling star athletes to step up their game to a whole new level. Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on the physical connection between the muscles and joints, and your body posture.
While using this neuromuscular orthotic, originally designed and used for treating TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome), patients were seeing remarkable increases in strength and balance. From these findings, the PPM was developed.
The PPM provides protection as well as enhances an athlete's natural performance. This is achieved by properly aligning and relaxing muscles in the face, and improving muscle recruitment and vertebrae alignment.
In order to custom fit your PPM, A TENS (Transcutaneous Electro-Neural Stimulation) machine is used to help relax your muscles. Once your facial muscles are in this relaxed position, your PPM is fitted. Wearing your specifically-made PPM, enables your jaw to stay in its optimal position, relieving the stress muscles and thus giving you the best bite, improved balance, and increased upper-body strength.
There are currently over 150 professional athletes using this technology. Dallas Cowboy- Terrell Owens is among a growing list of star athletes to use the PPM. Other Notables include St. Louis Ram-Josh Brown, LA Dodger-Manny Ramirez, Milwaukee Bucks -Michael Redd, PGA-Scott McCarron, and now Dallas Diamonds own star receiver Danilynn Welniak. The Diamonds receiver is looking forward to being a part of the newest level of professional sports technology. "We depend on training for speed, strength and endurance to give us that added advantage every season and I am hoping this will be the next step toward a successful year in 2009."
Dr. Coats believes that The PPM will become a standard of excellence for athletes of all levels of ability. "I would encourage anyone who is interested in improving their athletic ability to talk to us about taking a short and simple test for The PPM. We all have different goals when it comes to sports, but there isn't anyone who wouldn't like to have an overall increase in strength, balance, and range of motion. The PPM is a great, natural way to achieve these things."
